Thanks phatboy, that too is my understanding and why I'm wanting to do this upgrade, it'll also help delay the need to upgrade the car. I'm currently in the process of ordering the parts needed :)

Hi Willow5, as you've successfully carried out this upgrade I just wanted to ask if you have the wire gauge to make up the connectors and also if you had to get additional pins for the connectors and what their part numbers are?
I've order the parts from Aliexpress, but just want to make sure I have everything ready to go for when they turn up.

Cheers

Hi calnorth,

Thanks for the reply, slightly confused as from reading this thread it talks about replacing the J11 head unit with a J11b unit ? or is this not the case and have completely misread the entire thread?

Cheers

I only see the gain being a stable firmware and no increased functionality. If this thread assures a reliable 1 for 1 swap out...ok. A mob phone only works on music (mp3). A near singular Bluetooth profile and no Android functionality. The headunit you describe and is for J11b has a non android bespoke operating system which is heavily limited.

Wireless Android Auto I last saw to be under development..couple of months back.
I've understood the benefits to be:
- Software upgrade over WiFi
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support
- Way less clunky
That applies to the circa 2019 headunit...doesn't it? Completely different to Connect (LCN) 3 of 2017 and on.

If the proposal is to fit the 2019 headunit variant...how much is it? I had a feeling it was very Nissan high hence the threads elsewhere to fit a non OEM headunit..... Dasaita

So little update, finally got all the connectors and followed the wiring instructions connected the head unit and got the expected System Locked message, I managed to glitch it to start but couple of strange things;

1st - Camera is a black screen and shows the grid lines but this car as 360 cameras, does this mean the head unit isn't setup for 360?
2nd - when I connect my phone (using a Y splitter) I got it to play music but could see how to get andriod auto, any ideas?

Cheers

Managed to get the cameras to flash up, so know the 360 is working, they don't stay on but believe this is due to the system being locked... Andriod Auto issue turned out to be the cable, used another cheaper cable and worked fine.

Got it booked in with Nissan for the key reprogramme on Monday.

If any one wants the wiring diagrams, I've redrawn them in Photoshop, makes it easier to follow. Let me know.

Hi all,

I've been following this thread with interest but have noticed some omissions in recent discussions.

I understand to do this work/fit the newer head unit you needs:-
A headunit to match the country required - i.e right hand drive for UK
A headunit to match the car specifiction - i.e a 'parking button' is assisted parking is on your car spec.
A set of adapter cables/wiring harness to change the existing connections to the newer headunit connections.
A friendly Nissan dealer with knowledge to reprogram the cars 'keys'

What seems to have been lost is the microphone?
At some point there was discussion on a newer microphone required for the telephone system, is this still required or can the adapter cables sort this out.

I know I'm going over old ground but this is the best option I can find to upgrade my headunit on my 67 Qashqai and keep the stock look and functions.
I did read other forums, in Australia and US on the same issue but they have 'disappeared'. All along the same way with some talk of the adapter harness being for sale/manufactured.

I don't think the country is important, nor the car spec., as the units are all the same, and the re-coding to the car enables the features within software.

No idea on the microphone though!

--> Yes this is true if you've got the 360 (AVM) cameras, as the screen split will be incorrect.

A headunit to match the car specifiction - i.e a 'parking button' is assisted parking is on your car spec.
--> This is also correct, although the units can be reprogrammed using Consult 3+, no Nissan dealer will carry this out, so you would need to find a specialist which has Nissan Consult 3+ to reprogramme the head unit... therefore its best to try and find one which is from a matching spec car to save the additional hassle.

A set of adapter cables/wiring harness to change the existing connections to the newer headunit connections.
--> it's fairly easy and straightforward to make the wiring harness, which allows installation without damaging the existing wiring, thus making it easily reversible. It's best to get a depinning set from Amazon, this allows for you to remove the pins from the wiring plugs from Aliexpress and then remake them following the wiring diagrams.

A friendly Nissan dealer with knowledge to reprogram the cars 'keys'
--> this is a straightforward process and easily done by any Nissan dealer, standard charge is £60 for 30 minutes labour, they will need both keys and don't need to know about the stereo at the time of reprogramming.

With regards to the microphone, you don't lose this and it still works fine for Google assistant to request a destination etc... the only issue is if you make a call the recipient will hear themselves back as an echo, so if you make a lot of calls from the car then you will need to purchase the newer map reading light unit which includes the new microphone which has dual microphones for noise cancellation, this then needs an additional wire adding down to the head unit plug.

Other things to consider is that car settings which are changed through the head unit will be lost, the only things I've noticed is the auto door lock when setting off and the dash sign recongnition only works when it sees a physical sign, it no longer shows the road speed from the sat nav. Neither of these are major issues as the added benefit of Andriod Auto/CarPlay and Google Maps/Waze outweigh these.

The cost for doing this upgrade is approximately £400 (£300 for head unit, £40 for tools/materials & £60 for key reprogramming)

Thanks mark1984, those answers have certainly cleared up some points.
It’s looking more like a viable option.

My main reason is a better telephone system, especially getting to hands free voice activated calling.
Although CarPlay would be a huge bonus.

Now the only issue is making up a good wiring harness.

Something like this :

I wonder if this could be used?

Hi Ian,

Those wiring looms look rather messy, the best way is to make them yourself which is easily done by ordering the connectors through Aliexpress and then using a de-pinning tool to depin the plugs so you can move them to where you require them.

Here are the links to the connectors required;

Allow 2-3 weeks for the Aliexpress parts to arrive, then follow the wiring diagrams;
