Hi,
Are these items vital for the general usage of the vehicle? I have just fitted a new front OS wheel bearing and it was only when I got everything apart that I noticed said dust cover is in pretty poor condition. I didn't have time to source one, and I was having enough trouble getting the bearing fixing bolts out in any case, so I have re-fitted the old rusty one.
I can get them on Ebay, but don't really want the hassle of dismantling the whole kit and kaboodle just to fit this cover.
Anyone have thoughts on this? My Qashqai is 2009 1.5 dci n-tec
Thanks

Further note. A friend of mine told me today he thinks the car would fail its MOT for having badly corroded or non-existant dust covers. Anyone with MOT knowledge know if this is correct.? As I only fitted the new bearing last weekend, and so all bolts etc are in good condition, I am of a mind to fit a new dust cover anyway. Should be an easy job as everything is good. Also, on the subject of wheel bearings, what are peoples' opinions on changing the NS front bearing soon,(I've just changed the OS one) or does the theory that both bearings should be changed together not hold water.
Any advice/opinions would be gratefully received.

A pity no one has responded on the dust cover issue. I thought these were to reduce the brake dust going onto the wheel not for any particular technical issue - so I don't see that an MoT would reject them.
On another car I had wheel bearings replaced only one at a time.

Thanks Gloucester. When I changed my OS bearing, the ABS sensor (probably never been out) would not move in the hub, so I had to break it to get the old bearing out. I've drilled out the old sensor and have a new one on its way. I know I don't have to dismantle the bearing to fit the new sensor, but have decided to fit a new dust cover in any case, more for cosmetic reasons than anything else. Will take your advice and not change the NS bearing for the sake of it. It may last a long time yet so no point in wasting money at this time.

They are there to stop dirt and stones going to the brake disc. They are NOT an MOT item, unless they were physically touching or interfering with the brake disc. Nothing wrong if they are removed. You would find on many cars after they rust up, people remove them. They are notorious for rusting on the T30 version of the mk1 Nissan X-Trail.DougAlsager wrote: ↑Sat Jul 09, 2022 8:04 pm Hi,
