Thought it worth a dedicated topic:

Certainly, this feels like the best-resolved and least compromised powertrain you can have in the Qashqai, as it stands, doing away with both the frustrating manual and droning CVT available on the standard 1.3-litre engine while promising enhanced fuel economy and reduced emissions. It’s not a particularly quick or engaging powertrain by any stretch of the imagination, but it has been tuned to work best in urban and suburban environments (where target buyers allegedly spend three-quarters of their time) and it does indeed make a lot of sense at low speeds.

...

Nissan estimates that the E-Power will ultimately account for 40% of all Qashqai sales, making it one of the most important additions to the firm’s line-up in recent memory. First impressions of the finished car suggest that’s a credible and realistic ambition, if not even slightly pessimistic: it’s easy to imagine any prospective Qashqai customer being sold the benefits of this powertrain.

Where it might fall down is on the basis of its premium over the standard Qashqai – prices range from £32,950 for entry-level Acenta Premium trim to £40,980 for the Tekna+ range-topper – but it’s still broadly cheaper than comparable plug-in hybrids, so if the numbers stack up for the type of driving you do, it could be a very welcome innovation.

...

0-62mph - claimed - 8.5sec
Top speed - 105mph
Claimed fuel economy - 53.3mpg
Power - 188bhp
Torque - 243lb ft
CO2 - 119-123g/km

Good news that it's available on all trims except the Visia (which has hardly any sales in any case).

... prices range from £32,950 for entry-level Acenta Premium trim to £40,980 for the Tekna+

So to check out the premium over other drive trains let's look at current prices as posted at Nissan's website - where the e-power doesn't yet feature!:

Acenta Premium:

Manual 140 = £28,105
Manual 158 = £28,825
Auto 158 = £30,425

So since the latter is the closest equivalent that's a reasonable £2,525 more?

Tekna+:

Manual 158 2WD = £36,325
Auto 158 2WD = £38,275
Auto 158 4WD = £40,005

So since the middle one is the closest equivalent that's a reasonable £2,705 more?

Both calculations assume no other differences apart from the drive train.

Claimed fuel economy - 53.3mpg

The 158 auto in comparison is given at Nissan's website as 44.9mpg for the Acenta Premium and 43.8mpg for the Tekna+ (probably different owing to the wider tyres).

So a useful economy improvement is potentially there. Anyone care to do a break-even calculation? :)

This is the most appealing variant in the Qashqai line-up. Nissan's e-Power tech has addressed our issues with the Qashqai's lacklustre engine line-up, and while the car still falls short in some areas, the extra refinement, efficiency and performance e-Power brings seems worth the cash to us given the potential to recoup running costs. Not to mention the improved driving experience.[/]

The e-Power system works well, and it’ll suit some customers down to the ground. Sensible emissions and the flexibility of a petrol engine will appeal to company car drivers, and those who mostly cover lower mileages, while the relatively low purchase price compared with a plug-in hybrid and impressive urban economy will tempt plenty of suburban commuters.

The problem is that most of those attributes also apply to plug-in hybrids, which can save a lot on fuel for short journeys and offer even lower emissions (and running costs) for company car drivers.

Yes, plug-in hybrids are often slightly less efficient on long runs, they’re usually more expensive up front and you need to charge them to get the best of the powertrain, which means you probably need off-street parking, but the PHEV likes of the Cupra Formentor and Ford Kuga are cheaper to run and better cars than the Qashqai to drive, too.

There’s no denying that the Nissan Qashqai e-Power features really interesting and novel tech under its bonnet. It could be the perfect in-between option if you want an electrified car but are not yet ready to get involved in the charging up side of things.

That said, it adds a premium of around £2,000 to each of the trim levels and doesn’t really feel like it justifies that extra cost with outstanding efficiency.

What the E-Power delivers very successfully is the smooth, silent experience you get from an EV. Driving in town is where it’s most impressive, with battery assistance off the line and an engine (combined with anti-noise system) that’s difficult to detect when cutting in. In that aim, it’s succeeded in making a quiet city car – Nissan reckons it’ll do about 1-2 miles on pure EV, but we were unable to match this.

...

Acceleration is tardy off the line unless you’re brutal with the accelerator, in which case the engine cuts in gruffly, and it picks up its skirts for a 0-62mph time of 7.9 seconds.

...

The E-Power hybrid system is an excellent bit of kit. It’s almost seamless, quiet and punchy enough once you’re on the move. Undoubtedly, Nissan’s over-egging the pudding by saying it offers EV driving from a petrol car. In truth, it’s an excellent hybrid model and one that delivers power and drivability without some of the compromises you’ll find elsewhere

The proof in this pudding will be how economical it is in the real-world. Will it be economical enough to satisfy those existing Qashqai owners used to the range and parsimony of a diesel engine? They’ll love the refinement and peace, but if it doesn’t pull more than 50mpg out of the hat easily, it might leave them unimpressed.

However, as it stands, it now feels that the Qashqai has the drivetrain it always deserved – and Nissan can once again look at selling a model range worthy of its position as the best-selling family SUV in the UK.

The way I read it - and I didnt really absorb it all - was that the car still has an engine that is used to drive a motor.

Might as well put a 240v generator and a jerry can of petrol in the back of a Tesler :D :D :D :D
