J12/Mark 3 Nissan Qashqai VED Reclassification

There is a post, on the Facebook J12 group, showing a letter from Nissan regarding the incorrect classification of the J12 Nissan Qashqai. This was a problem caused by Nissan when informing the DVLA.

Most of the new Nissan Qashqai’s were first registered as a fuel type of ‘Petrol Car’. That is incorrect.

Nissan are now working with the DVLA to reclassify the All-New Nissan Qashqai as ‘Hybrid Electric’ fuel type due to its mild hybrid power train.

Apparently, Mild Hybrid vehicles attract a discount in vehicle tax under the Alternative Fuel car tax class.

The vehicle tax will need to be adjusted moving forward.

Also, a new Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) will be issued by the DVLA showing the change of classification.

There may also be an overpayment of vehicle tax because of this error. If applicable, a credit/refund will be issued by the DVLA in due course.

A couple of people have commented that they have received their new V5C log book.

Keep an eye out in the post for a letter from Nissan and a new V5C log book - it would be nice to receive a cheque too! ;) :)

P.S. I have checked my V5C and it says Petrol. Nothing yet from Nissan or DVLA :(

If true then that will be £155 a year (saving of £10) and a refund of £10 from the first payment. Not much but I’d rather have it in my pocket than the DVLA.

Mine is still showing as petrol on DVLA website. Suspect it will take some time for the DVLA to do the necessary.

I'm amazed Nissan got such a simple thing wrong!

To err is human. Great to hear they spotted the error and are openly correcting it. Not many car manufacturers would own up and take corrective action.

Yes, that’s right @frogo.

I have just checked what I paid for the first year’s VED and it said £275 on my invoice. The dealership combines the VED with the first registration fee of £55.

Therefore I paid £220 for the first year’s VED based on 146 g/km CO2 emissions, as per this screenshot below from Parkers website (2021 rates). The VED should have been £210 for the first year. Thereafter it will be £155 per year.

It would appear that the rates increased by £10 per annum from April this year?

I might get a refund of £5.83? (7 months) :? 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is mine from the DVLA Website today. Going to check the V5C now. .... Interesting - my V5C is correct (Says Alternative Fuel ) but the dealer took the full £275 (rather than £210 + £55) and paid to the DVLA so something is going on. Phoned the dealer and they say it's DVLA I need to chase so that's going to be fun. I could have been caught in between when they caught the issue

The DVLA website is still showing the fuel type as PETROL for mine, same as my current V5C log book:

I have received a letter from the DVLA this morning, 10th May 2022, regarding the incorrect fuel type when my Qashqai was first registered.

Also enclosed in the envelope was a letter from Nissan:
