First things first, I am a complete idiot when it comes to cars.

My 2015 Qashqai 1.2 has died. It was always heavy on oil use, but it came to grief last week. The garage has come back to say that there is no compression in cylinders 1 or 2, which indicates piston or valve failure, and that this means a new engine. Now that I've found these forums I see that this is not uncommon.

I'm now trying to work out what to do next - we have limited finances, so I think it looks like webuyanycar.com (quoting £2.4K for a non-running 2015 Qashqai) and then use that towards a lesser replacement.

However, I've also seen a number of websites (for example engines4sale.co.uk) offering services to supply and fit a reconditioned engine. I've asked for quotes. Is this the kind of thing only a car idiot would consider?

Well I presume you'd get a guarantee of sorts from any reputable supplier.

Personally I'd see how much such a repair would cost, then do the sums. What would you get for the car after it's been repaired and then put up for sale?

Not sure I'd want to have a reconditioned engine and then hang onto the car.

The first quote I've had is £1800, from Engine Technicians Ltd, which seems very cheap to me, given quotes on here of £8K for new. Is that too good to be true? They do give a six month warranty, but I can't find any reviews on the web.

If that is the company from Essex way, they were only formed in 2021, shop around there must be others.

OK, I have gone into Checkatrade and google - sounds like it's potentially a solution though. If anyone knows any reputable and relatively cheap services in Essex then please shout! No idea if £1800 is a reasonable ball park figure, but I guess I'll find out very soon...

Is that price supply & fit, if so that is reasonable. £8k is a rip off imo. You can get performance car engines for that price supply and fit!

You say that there is no compression in cylinder 1 and 2. Is it not possible to rebuild your existing engine.

Have a look on Ebay, that appears to be the going rate to fit a fully refurbished engine on a QQ 1.2

I'm sorry, I can't comment on your engine saga. But. Take the price webuyanycar.com giv you with a VERY large piece of salt. I had an online valuation from them for a Honda CRV, which was in excellent condition. By the time the guy had gone through every single teeny tiny defect he could find, the price offered went through the floor. That car would have gone straight onto a garage forecourt needing no work on it for a LOT more than they were prepared to offer. Factor at least 30% off what the online offer is into your ultimate decision. Whichever way you go, good luck.

Thanks all! In the end I went on the basis of Checkatrade reviews, and have gone with Regal Engines - quote £2450 plus VAT. A bit more than some, but all the lower quotes were from companies with no reviews of any sort on Google as far as I can see. Fingers crossed!

Sounds like a wise decision!
