Noisy Gearshift

Hi,
Compared to my previous cars the gear selector sounds noisy as in a plastic sound when shifting at its worst from 2nd to 3rd, is this normal, my other cars were silent pretty much.
It shifts cleanly and I had a look under the gator but could not see anything amiss and the nylon ball at the shift base seemed to have a white grease on it.
Would a drop of heavy 140 gear oil help do you think.
On a plus note I got a full set of genuine mudflaps for £25, but have to drill holes
