Calling 1.2 Petrol Owners

Hi all,

Considering a 1.2 Petrol Manual QQ for the wife, but heard a lot about unreliability and random loss of oil, as well as chain rattling, etc.

Im intrigued to understand if these are isolated issues or is it totally common and these 1.2 Petrol engines should be avoided at all costs?

I appreciate all cars have niggles and common points of failure, I just dont want to end up with a lemon.

We're looking at something around 2014-2017 - depending on price, etc.

Thanks.

I didn’t have one but

People tend to take to social media to complain about their cars but rarely to praise them.
You can’t be 100% sure but a car from 2014 would probably have already had its issues and been repaired. The troubles were probably sorted out by 2017 - if I remember correctly, the problem was with a batch of engines that had a manufacturing fault. I believe there’s a spreadsheet that shows the relevant chassis numbers, although whether anyone still has that - who knows.

Me too, I’m considering buying a Nissan pulsar but put off by many reports of engine issues and oil loss and reluctance by Nissan to address the issues.

I didn't feel I would get all the good on there as I was just seeing the bad.

It's a big decision so hoping to get both sides of the coin.

Is the 1.2 just a simple no no!!??

I had a 2016 1.2 model - 40000 miles - didnt use or lose a drop of oil.
No issues what so ever apart from very average fuel economy - the 1.3 is a revelation

Interesting, see this is the feedback im after as surely all 1.2 cannot be oil burners?

When you say very average, roughly what were you achieveing?

The 1.3 is too new for my budget unfortunately.

We have a 2.0 Diesel Astra / 2011 model at the moment, I appreciate anything petrol wont be as economical, but we have no use for the Diesel as its 90% short trips.

Mainly motorway driving - 50 miles to work - average per trip was 38 to 40 mpg.
However gentle driving at say 40mph yielded better figures.

The 1.3 is giving me a repeatable 48mpg for the same journey

My Astra Diesel gives around 34-38mpg city driving, according to the trip.
I think a Petrol 1.2 would be arund the 30-35mpg mark?

But it is a too smaller an engine for the size of car?

depends of vehicle weight and gearing.
The J11 weighs about the same as a Focus despite its size and dimensions.
