Hi everyone,

New member here on the forum - will be posting a proper introduction on the right subforum :D

I recently purchased a J10 from 2011.
It's a 1.6 SVE Petrol 117 bhp with 98.000 Kms.
Dealership full service history and mechanically seems to be in good nick.
I noticed today that the engine has a seemingly loud rattle noise on Start-up - noticeable from sec. 9 to sec. 13 in the video below:

The car had just been driven for 30mins or so.
Do you think this is coming from the valves clearance needing adjusting? It sounds almost like a diesel at the moment!

Any thoughts on this are welcome.

Thank you for your time,
Pedro

Welcome to the forum Pedro

Hopefully someone more technically minded than me will be along and able to help.

Have you changed the oil? Seems like it is the valve hydraulic adjusters which can have that effect with wrong oil put in, or thicker oil.

Thanks for the input!

I literally bought the car a few days ago. Don't know how this rattle got past me then!
The oil was changed last month at a Nissan dealership and looking at the dipstick, it does have fresh oil in there.
The car has always been serviced in the same dealership since it was bought (as per the service record).
In every service, they have used a fully synth 5w30, which seems to be in-line with the specification referenced in the manual.
I live in Ireland, btw
Do you think a 0w20 or 0w30 would help with the rattle?

As you have only had the car a few days it’s probably wise to take it back to the dealer and get them to check it properly.
You must have some sort of warranty and consumer protection.

It was a private sale actually.
I asked the seller not to start the car on the day of the test drive so that I could do it from cold. I could not hear any rattle then.
When i first started it this morning, again the rattle is not noticeable. It seems to be there only when the engine has warmed up.
The car runs smooth and there are no fault codes at the moment.
I've watched a few videos on YouTube of the same engine running and, call it wishful thinking, they sounded similar to mine.
Oh well, I can live with it but will mention it next time it goes in for a service.
