Hi all!
New here so go easy on me!
Me and my partner are thinking of buying a 1.2 Petrol Qashqai from what appears to be a decent used car dealer. It's a 2015 with 41K on the clock along with full service history at Nissan main dealer. We are contemplating taking out the RAC warranty that's linked through this forum for peace of mind.
The one thing I have a slight element of worry around is the reports of Qashqai owners having to have new engines due to burning too much oil or something along those lines... with it having 41K on the clock with the original engine I'd hope that this car will keep on trucking for years to come as we are looking to buy this as a family car with a baby due soon. I keep on top of maintenance and service my cars every 7K miles for peace of mind.
Can any current Qashqai owners give me a list of things to check when I view and drive the car on Thursday? I've not owned or driven a Qashqai previously so it's all new to me but I am pretty knowledgeable on car mechanics so can normally spot a dud when looking at used cars.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers!
Mark

Welcome to the forum.
I didn’t have a 1.2 but lots of members have had positive experiences with them.
I think it’s wise to hear about the negative aspects so you can make an informed choice.
I’m going to say check the obvious stuff like full service history, etc.
I'd be inclined to tell the dealer you want to look at the history as they often are kept separate.

Welcome to this forum.
Unfortunately we can't say how many of these cars have engine problems, but I certainly wouldn't touch one without a comprehensive warranty that would cover replacement if it failed. I investigated extended warranties and decided to sell instead when the original guarantee ran out. Mine was fine at that point but only on 20k miles.
One of the symptoms is a timing chain rattle but when you don't know what the engine sounds like if it's OK it might be difficult detecting whether the engine is noisier than it should be.
Likewise the other main symptom is excessive oil consumption, but that's not something you can check before buying.

Well at the age he's looking it'll probably be too expensive to get a 1.3 but the 1.6 would be an alternative.

Seriously, honestly, no, I cannot recommend it.
The risk of getting a bad engine is too great imo. Those with bad engines get moved into the 2nd hand market much quicker than those with the good engines.
If it were me I would go for 1.5 diesel or the 1.6 petrol unless the newer 1.3 petrol is within reach.
As Buffy said, the 1.3 is so much better than the 1.2

I believe the 1.5 is a Renault unit.
I had one on a 66 plate from new and put about 70000 miles on it in 3 years.
Its ok , not the most fuel efficient , nor the quickest , but mine was trouble free.
Strangely Im finding the 1.3 petrol almost identical in fuel economy - but costs less to fill up , is quieter and faster.
Shame you cant stretch to that as its a real cracker of an engine
