Announced today (6th June 2022) at Apple’s WWDC 2022

Nissan (also other car manufacturers) have entered into a partnership with Apple to better integrate Apple CarPlay with their infotainment system and the digital cockpit/combimeter in future models (no upgrade/updates to existing systems?).

Heating controls, mileage, speedometer, engine temp, fuel consumption, etc. will all be integrated into Apple CarPlay.

You will also be able to customise each screen with your own personal widgets.
Apple is reinventing the driving experience with a new generation of CarPlay features, deeply integrating the functions of the vehicle with your iPhone. The new system is reportedly capable of controlling the entirety of the vehicle's infotainment systems, regardless of the system that it is being run on, effectively making your phone the "core" of the in-cabin systems.

Looks great, but this is, IMHO, in fact ... some bad news !?
In the near future car manufacturers wil probably feel forced to choose between Android Automotive -or- this new Apple Enhanced Carplay offer.
Our Nissan infotainment systems are already made obsolete by this in ... just a few years.
Great if you are entitled to a company-car every 3 years or so !
The only other option is to Lease/rent a car because as tech is going buying a car, be it an EV or ICE or whatever in-between has become a bad financial as wel as technological decision.

It would appear Apple want to be the default option for all the car’s integrated systems rather than using an alternative Google system, assuming Google are planning something similar?

This new integrated Apple CarPlay won’t be available until late 2023.

A few more screenshots of the new integrated Apple CarPlay features.

All infotainment screens are fully customisable by way of icon/information placement and colours.

That does look great... But I really don't like the idea of having no physical buttons for heating controls etc.
I think it is dangerous having to take your eyes off the road for so long.

For the sake of customers I was hoping Apple and Google would strike a deal ... not so of course !
This is great and all is the US of A where Apple close to owns the smartphone market, but at the other side of the pond ... ???
I don't think we will be able to link our Android phones with this system, but this is probably not even necessary as everything -Apple- is already included.
Physical controls ??? ... may -unfortunately- become a relic of the past sooner rather than later.
If we only look at the Nissan Ariya ... physical controls are almost gone.
Anyway, if I could ever get an infotainment system like the one above, I will probably be all for it ... looks so great to me.
