Hi everyone,
New member here and first time, very recent qashqai owner.
I have a 2013 1.6 petrol model with the ntec+ package.
First impressions are positive and I'm glad to be rid of diesel! I came from a 2013 astra estate which I have to say was a better made, handling and far more powerful car. That said, I'm enjoying the qashqai for the 3 days I've owned it so far.

Anyway, this car idles very high on cold starts and stays that way for several minutes, I've attached a YouTube video of it to show what I mean.

Can anyone confirm if this is just a Nissan thing and normal? Or should I be using my 6 month warranty to have it addressed?

Thanks.

I'd say not normal at all to be high rev like that. Something may be sticking

It maybe the cold start sticking, try blipping the throttle, that may sort it temporarily but I think i needs sorting

Thats normal...until engine operating temp is reached. Just drive off and forget it.

I'll add a bit more and my engine is the 1.6 petrol. The engine and particularly its sensors along the exhaust need to get up to correct operating temperature. Until then the ECU will increase revs and/or fuel mix....richer. The sensor inputs to the ECU have to come into correct operating range or parameters. If they don't then ECU errors will arise and the engine will not run correctly and that can become an emissions problem...especially for diesels.

In the early days when O2 (lambda/oxygen) sensors weren't electrically heated the increased revs continued and dependant on use/external temp ran for at least 10 or 15 mins. Its a variable. Rough/limited running after that time period was usually a faulty O2 sensor.

Its really what the old auto/manual carburettor choke did.

Thanks for the replies. I'm very surprised to hear the opinion that this is normal, at times it's nearly touching 2k and makes the car start to shudder as its revving so high when cold....it effects driving too, when pulling up to a junction you lose engine braking as its still revving high for a few minutes. I've asked the dealer to have a look, I'll report back.

That may be a bit extreme as its not over running when I drive off...or at a nearby junction. 1.5k-ish is normal. I would of thought the ECU would know engine revs/temp and road speed thereby adjusting idle revs so that it does not compete with throttle position. Something like that?

Please let us know..interesting stuff.
