Thinking outside of the box here, what is the coolant replacement schedule on these cars? Could it be this or lack of replacement that causes it to break down the weld or composition of the plastics?

Is there any visual evidence of the "thicker housing" mentioned here in newer versions?

I assume he means the rubber seal is thicker not the actual housing?
Having seen the two together on here I can’t spot any difference myself, but good on him for printing it in a national newspaper, I use that word loosely. :D

I've had the same thing happen to my 69 plate Qashqai, still waiting to hear what the damage is!

Has anyone reported the failure to DVSA? If not is it worth us all reporting our own incidents?

Mine went in yesterday. I told them what the issue was when I arrived and they rang me today confirming the Thermostat housing had a leak. I asked them if they would replace it under warranty, they so no, because no recall had been issued. They said 2 hours work...pretty sure I could do it myself in 1 hr, so I might push back on that. Official Nissan part is £180 apparently. I will ask them to retain the old one for me. I also asked if they had confirmed no damage to the engine, they said there was nothing on the report to say there was, but I'm going to push them to put an explicit statement in the final report, so I get their 'expert' response...which is after all why you take it to a dealerships garage. I get 12 month warranty on the part, but not sure of consequential if it fails again and kill the engine. All in about £500 quid they said...that is what you pay for 'expert' service. so we'll see.

Good luck! Definitely get the old part back to check which version it is and to help us see where the leak is etc.

I've had a response back from DVSA, I think it's definitely worth everyone reporting the issue so that the cars could potentially get recalled and the part replaced.

I emailed them with a link to this forum too so finger crossed!

My thermostat housing cracked off last week. No warnings displayed, we didnt drive far. When driving down the road the car was pulling but the car had no warning signs. We got home which was two mins away. We knew something wasnt right and looked in the bonnet. There was still coolant in the car, we turned the engine on again and the thermostat housing flew off and the coolant went everywhere so we turned the car off. The car only has 28k mile, 2019 car and we have only had it for 20 months. The warranty expired oct 2022. Nissan got the car in for a diagnostics test and it confirmed engine has blew costing 8.2k. We are awaiting Nissan getting back to confirm what the goodwill gesture would be. Reading all these comments I am so angry and feel i shouldnt have to pay anything. I have seen people have contacted watchdog and the DVSA. Is there anything I can do to help and get these cars recalled?

Jeez, seems to be an epidemic of these self destructing lately now. Sorry to hear of your trouble. When you say the car was pulling what do you mean ? It was pulling ok, or was juddering or something ?

Sadly, Nissan have not issued a recall and therefore 'goodwill' is all anyone can hope for. Mine is due to have its housing replaced tomorrow and I have asked them to retain it and put a note on the report that the engine seems undamaged...however, I'll be surprised if they actually do the second bit, but then that is why I took it to the specialists!

When I get my part returned, I'm thinking of seeing what the interest is on this site for us clubbing together to get an independent FEA analysis of several of the failed parts. This could provide an independent assessment of the failure mode and hopefully give people here something legitimate to stick in front of both Nissan and their own lawyer if looking to recover money on replacement engines, T/C housings and labour. It could also be sent to the motor ombudsman and DVSA.
