Thanks to this forum he went to Nissan armed with lots of information and knowing there were plenty of other cases out there. He bought from Nissan dealer and has had it serviced there as required by servicing schedule. Hoping the entire thing is covered by a "good will gesture" but waiting to hear.
I will update once we have a final outcome but I'm really posting to add another case so others have as much ammo as possible if they need it.
Same happened to me Monday. 19 plate, 51K, 3 months out of warranty, full main dealer service history. As soon as they diagnosed "cooked" engine then the local dealer offered me £2.4K as good will gesture. I have escalated to Nissan customer service as suggested by the dealer, but the fact they were so quick to offer me what is in effect 25% indicates they are aware of issue and almost admitting liability. Fingers crossed we both get it sorted but I'm guessing it could take months and with the possibility of a 10k bill hanging over me I'm loath to incur more expense in hiring a car

Reading all of this,I just don't get Nissan. Isn't it cheaper to publish a recall on that issue instead massive loss of costumers and posible lawsuits?

Reputational damage. Think Post Office and some NHS Trusts, or Peugeot for cars - the CEO's just aim for brand protection.

But you're right - this could cost them long term. Reputational damage can take years to recover.

That's why VW immediately admitted the emissions scandal. Best to get it out of the way, particularly as they knew other manufacturers were doing the same.

We had Nissans since 2009 - Never again. And the thermostat was only one of the issues. Thankfully the engine survived so we could repair and sell it asap.

Nissan's approach seems to be stuff the existing customers, we'll just replace them with new ones who don't do their research.

I think that customer service in the u.k is a disgrace, they seem to all want your money then tell you to f*** off.
I just sold my qashqai, really because it wasn't getting used as much since retirement. But the thermostat housing threat was also a nail in the coffin. Numerous sensor lights and warning lights fixed under warranty, tpms sensors etc. Car was only between 2 and 3 years at the time.
Really not good enough.
Wifes suzuki vitara same age similar miles not one fault.
The phrase once bitten twice shy comes to mind.
I wouldn't look at another.

I can only think that the u.k built engines( Sunderland) source their thermostat housings from a different parts supplier than the European built renault engines.
In which case my thought would be fit the renault part.

I had mine replaced today, as I was too concerned about the risk of failure.

See attached photos of the new and the old housings, for comparisson

Cost be £140+tax for the part, and 2.5hrs labour and some coolant at a local mechanic.

The new one seems a little more chunky around the middle and the lower pipe connection.
