Interesting. If only purchasing car insurance could be easier and more straightforward - here's my recent experience:

I was with Flux Direct (part of Adrian Flux) for about seven years when owning my Fabias prior to getting my Qashqai. They were always competitive.

When I bought my Qashqai in 2016 they refused to transfer the policy to it (*); instead I had to have a refund which was not at all pro-rata and was biased (to the tune of £50 extra I seem to recall) to me taking out a new policy with them.

I did this at a cost of £226.63 because the alternative quotes I could find were not more than £50 less.

However come renewal in 2017 Flux Direct wanted £259.81 - an unreasonable increase in my view - and I took out a policy with AA Insurance who offered a really competitive £170.95.

However come renewal in 2018 AA Insurance wanted £252.02 - an unreasonable increase in my view - and I took out a policy with Hastings Direct who offered a competitive £187.65.

Why can't car insurance go up in line with inflation? (**) Why do we have to perform this annual dance around the companies?

* - apparently it was only for cars owned at least six months - I've never come across such a peculiarity before.

** - please don't give the excuse that claims are increasing. My policy with Flux Direct in 2009 for a Fabia vRS was £207.77

Hi there,

Thanks for taking the time to post your own experiences of obtaining motor insurance. Without viewing your own details I cannot comment on why your existing insurer back in 2017 for the Fabia were unable to cover the Qashqai - however, as an intermediary (not the insurer) we often find that insurers are favourable on certain models but not others. That's understandable if their claims statistics are skewed towards certain vehicles that they are experiencing high claims / theft ratios on. It's on these occasions we have to locate you a new policy which could potentially be the reason.

Insurers are across the board putting on general rate increases - whilst not being an actuary there won't be much correlation between these increases and the general rate of inflation - it's unfortunately a lot more complex than that. The general driving public will be unaware of the recent changes to the Ogden tables - which are in effect the governments method of calculating personal injury claims. This has had a significant impact on rate increases as the insurers claims reserves have to be bolstered to cover those who have unfortunately suffered life changing injuries. The insurers settlement figures based around the Ogden tables will inevitably be increased. Here's an article that explains the issue:-

https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... ogden-rate

Whilst we appreciate that it is slightly inconvenient to search each year if you are experiencing rate increases, it's likely attributable to factors briefly mentioned above but slightly beyond the scope of these posts.

It's worth mentioning that the motor market is extremely competitive and with plenty of companies around this enables the UK motorist to get a fair deal in general.

I hope that this goes someway to explaining the situation.

Febuary 2019

Emailed this company for a quote for our 2016 Qashqai but never received a reply, they must have so much work they can afford to ignore new customer requests.

I always do a comparison with my insurance. Recently SAGA sent me the quote for the coming year Home and Contents and it had gone up unreasonably. I called them and told them what I was getting quoted on the comparison website and they immediately reduced their quote by £20. If they only increased last year by the inflation rate then I would just pay it without having any hassle but they don't so every year I will go through this same procedure.

Just tried Adrian Flux by telephone for my wifes new QQ 2016. They were very good but could not include my son at 23 (needs to be over 25) as a named driver. Continued with the quote process for just my wife as policy holder and myself as named driver. We both have zero NCD as we have been named drivers on our sons policy for a few years. Price came back quite high but still reasonable. Went on comparison site and got quoted to include my son for just another £90. Good experiance on the call with AF but not for us this time around.
