premium v standard diesel

I have a 17 plate Qashqai, I also have a veterans discount card, part of the blue light scheme, where I can save 4p litre on regular diesel and 6p a litre on premium diesel,
not overly concerned with the savings although every bit helps these days,
a friend recently said premium is better for the car, which at my local garage is 10p a litre more expensive,
if I changed to premium what benefits would I and the car get from doing this?

A Nissan tech once told me to fill up with premium fuel once in every 4 fill ups to keep all the pipes etc as clean as possible. Premium is basically the same basic fuel but with more cleaning agents added.

I thought premium simply had a higher octane rating, or cetane if its diesel.
If the tech is right, wouldn't it be best to always use it?

Premium will have added additives in it. Like when you get a bottle of redex to add to fuel tank.

So it seems. Alternatively, do what I was doing and add it yourself. Probably cheaper in the long run, but as I said, I didnt see any difference.
