Had the same problem with my 2020 Qashqai.
New thermostat being ordered by dealer but not sure yet if there is any engine damage.
Car was fully serviced but just out of warranty.
I am based in Ireland but wondering if members who experienced engine problems after their thermostat casing blew, had any success in taking the matter to Nissan?
I would appreciate any detailed advice on the route I should take if I have to have major engine work done.
As far as I am concerned, this is a design flaw by Nissan & they should take responsibility.

Is this the first major issue being discovered on the 2018+ 1.3 engine?
I wonder if there would be any benefit in replacing the thermostat housing as a precaution?!

Hello,
I’d love to know what ended up happening Mal82. I had exactly the same experience as your wife - driving on the motorway at 70 and car went into limp mode. Taken a month for Nissan to look at it but when towed there this morning the RAC man said it’s the thermostat housing which exploded, coolant poured out.
Exactly the same as you with no warning signs at all - no lights etc. except for the Stop Start turning off. Won’t know Nissans prognosis till end of week but also considering legal action if it needs a new engine.
It’s a 69 reg too.

I have searched this forum for similar problems with the thermostat and the QQ 1.3 engine but found nothing of the sort ... at least not that this would kill the engine itself ?
Is this a common problem ??? ... does not seem like it ?
(potential CVT and 1.2 oil loss engine issues are enough so ... fingers crossed)

Doesn't seem to be a major problem as lots of qashqais now and various renaults fitted with this engine. Once it cracks and blows you'll never know if it's been plastic failure or the thermostat itself stuck and somehow the heat build up burst the housing pure conjecture of course.
Some plastic pipes etc go brittle with time. Don't know if these housings are similar. But I doubt it or the problem would be happening more.
