Hello, I have a Nissan Qashqai 2017 Tekna. Over the last couple of years the front two Tyre Pressure Monitoring Sensors have come detached and are rattling around inside the wheel/tyre. This has caused a light to come on the dashboard which is going to fail my MOT. Nissan service centre is quoting £250 to replace and code both, which seems a little on the expensive side... Are there any other options to get these either disabled or replaced more cheaply, I'm thinking of going to a tyre fitters and asking them to take off the tyres and either remove the sensors or try and screw them in again to see if that fixes it. Anybody here have any experience with this?

Certainly all the usual "tyre" places look at these. No one's reported one coming loose on a Qashqai here before so it will be interesting to find out what you find when they're extracted - I'd have thought the inevitable damage would have destroyed them. Surely you can't simply "disable" them can you - they'll be needed for the MoT? Let's check...

Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

The inspection of the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is for M1 vehicles first used on or after 1 January 2012.

The TPMS warning lamp (see diagram 3) can operate in many ways depending on the vehicle type. You must only reject vehicles if it’s clear that the lamp indicates a system malfunction and not simply indicating that one or more of the tyre pressures is low.

...

Tyre pressure monitoring system malfunctioning or obviously not working - Major [fail]

So it looks like they just check the warning light's not on?

Thanks all for your advice, yeah the light is on on the dashboard so it'll fail unless I get it fixed either at the Nissan service centre or elsewhere. Will give Kwik Fit a call and see what they can do, bit worried the TPMS has to be coded though.

Any garage with right diagnostic kit should be able to code replacement sensors to the car; ATS, MERIT amongst
other tyre retailers, see TPMS replacement as a growing revenue source.

An odd one for me...

TPMS warning light on, one sensor failing, car booked in.

Roll on a couple of weeks, sensor still not working BUT the dashboard warning light no longer shows at all.

I guess that'll at least help get it through the mot :)
