Qashqai Model: Mk.2 Qashqai Facelift - J11b (2017–2021)

Friend has always had a company car, now 4 years to retirement, has decided to take the cash allowance and buy a car so that when she retires she will hopefully still have this same car. The car she wants is a Qashqai as she previously had one as a company car (diesel Tekna) and loved it.

Her budget will be about £13-14k ish which seems to get her around a 3 year old car. The dilemma is does she go petrol or diesel? Most folk say steer away from diesel now.

However
1. She has around 4 years driving still to do and potentially 15k miles per annum. She will receive a pence per mile allowance so obviously the more mpg, the more money she will get.
2. Her budget would not stretch to the new 1.3 petrol engine - I am assuming the fact that Nissan replaced the 1.2 with the 1.3 would suggest the 1.2 had issues?

She wants front and rear sensors, heated seats and reversing camera - what is the minimum spec that would have these (they were on the Tekna I know but how far back the range do you need to go to get these toys?)

Any input / advice would be appreciated.

Bobby, I live in Berlin and last week at our Dealer the Parking Area was full of used J11A & J11B QQ‘s and with reasonable prices, Tekna‘s 2017 at around the price you are looking for. Obviously I am not saying buy a LH One from Berlin but it is worth looking around as there are offers out there to make way for the New QQ.
I have never had a diesel never really needed one, but these days there are severe laws coming in with Bans especially out here, so if you rely on a car you need to be able to use it, not park it and use public transport.
Regarding Specs you really need to get hold of a QQ Spec that is up for sale and assess what you really want, we have had 2x Tekna‘s now and they are excellent if you need all the Bells & Whistles.
Obviously the financial side for the next 4 years has to be kept in mind if this is a Bonus to her.

I posted this recently which might help you :

We had a 1,2L QQ for 5 years and never had a problem, but yes there was a Big Batch Problem with these Engines which need to warched out for. The 1,3L motor is way way better than the 1,2 L.
I hope this is of interest to you - Dave 😉👍

Cheers Dave, that spec breakdown is exactly what I am looking for!

Interestingly, I said to her I assume you will want a Tekna as it has all the toys like heated seats, heated windscreen (and she had one of these for a year).
Oh, she says, I didnt know it had them!

This is what I'm up against!

Was the issues with 1.2s a known problem that got sorted or are the problems always going to be there?

Bobby, if you have time and you will need it take a read of this post the longest ever. In the end it was down to a batch of engines, you will find the numbers in the post and there are very likely some still around so be careful - Dave 🙄

Nothing wrong with the 1.2 , I had one for a year.
Once they are run in - so to speak , and they loosen up , then they are perfectly adequate.

However the 1.3 is the engine that the range should have always had.....
More power , more torque , superior economy and great flexibility in all gears.

The economy was the winner for me , my daily commute average changed from approx 38mpg to 45mpg - for exactly the same journey

I briefly had a 1.2 petrol, and found it to be horribly underpowered, but that may just tell the way I like to drive.

I upgraded to a 1.3 petrol (140hp) and it's completely different, and far, far better.

So........................

Criteria:

The car she wants is a Qashqai
Her budget will be about £13-14k ish
around a 3 year old car.
petrol or diesel?
around 4 years driving still to do and potentially 15k miles per annum
Her budget would not stretch to the new 1.3 petrol engine - I am assuming the fact that Nissan replaced the 1.2 with the 1.3 would suggest the 1.2 had issues?
front and rear sensors,
heated seats and
reversing camera

No mention of auto or manual? When I was looking in 2016 there were LOADS more manuals than autos available.

Firstly a 3 year old car is going to be around 30k-40k miles so add onto that another 4x15k = 60k and you're up around 100k miles. How many more miles does she then intend to keep it? A seven year old car will be having regular MoT troubles?

Diesel bans are coming in so that might have an influence depending where she drives.

I would really urge going for the 1.3 engine over the 1.2 - even cars later than the supposedly affected VIN range have been reported as having problems.

Alternatively the 1.6 petrol.

A 1.5 diesel would need a cambelt at 5 years so factor that into the equation. And diesels are more expensive to service anyway. She'd need to do a calculation to determine what the saving in fuel might be compared to the increase in maintenance.

In that price range Autotrader is showing:
Diesel (451)
Petrol (491)

In that price range Autotrader is showing:
Auto (159) - 47 diesel and 112 petrol
Manual (753) - 404 diesel and 379 petrol

Here's a bargain:

Nissan Qashqai

2020 (69 reg) - 1.3 DIG-T Acenta Premium (s/s) 5dr - 9650 miles - £13,744

No heated seats but if something's got to give then surely that could! And I find them superfluous with fabric seats in any case.

Alternatively a pre-facelift 1.6 petrol:

2017 (17 reg) - 1.6 DIG-T TEKNA SUV 5 DOOR PANORAMIC GLASS ROOF SATNAV 360 & REAR CAMERA PARKING AIDS HEATED LEATHER SEATS BLUETOOTH DAB 19IN ALLOYS ONLY 13000 MILES - £13,995
(2015 Nissan Qashqai Tekna DIG-T 1.2 sold 15/6/18) ~ 2018 Suzuki Ignis SZ5 - 2018 Yamaha MT-07 ~ (2024 Volvo EX30 ordered)

Given the expected mileage, I would normally suggest a diesel.
But, government policy is likely to make older diesels (even clean ones like the 1.5) as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit.
That said, there may be a good diesel buyback scheme, but you can’t bank on that.

Reluctantly I suggest buying a 1.2l petrol.
In my humble opinion, any 1.2 that this lady could afford should have had a replacement engine (etc.) and if it doesn’t have this fact recorded, there’s likely to be plenty of choice.
I think she should get a manual, given that the automatic box from those days seems to suffer unduly.

Get the newest, highest specification car she can afford.

Well here is a 1.3 Tekna within budget

And there is always the power of negotiation..... a 2019 1.3 will have up to 20 months warranty left....

Don't worry about the diesels, they are being made until 2030 another 9 years and at present comply with Euro 6 which allows them even in the London ULEZ zone.
Past cars Mercedes B Class, S Class, E Class Estate, E Class Coupe, G Wagen, 260E interspersed with Peugeot 406 and Audi Coupe.
