140bhp and 160 bhp difference

Hi all just joined forum today but have been lurking whilst awaiting my new 2020 n-connecta.
I have been trying the search but no luck as i have a question i am hoping someone can answer.
I purchased my new car through an internet company and all went smoothly but i originally ordered a 140 bhp petrol car but after a couple of weeks i changed the order to the 160 bhp version , a couple of days before delivery i was given the reg and vin numbers and proceeded to check the vin online the trouble is it has come up as a 140 bhp.
Then a week after getting the car the log book arrived and it states it is a 117kw which equates to 158 bhp, so a conflict in bhp.
Probably grasping at straws but is there a way visually to tell the two engine powers apart ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Jim.

Firstly welcome to the Forum. I would definitely question your Internet Co. or get advice from a Nissan Dealer who should be able to Double Check it (but they might not be happy it’s from an Internet Dealer). If you have the Log Book with the facts on the 117kW / 160PS then you should be OK but double check it. Normally the description used is 140PS / 103kW & 160PS / 118kW. Just visually checking I do not think you will see a difference but perhaps someone can help - Dave 😉

Here is a Part Spec :
Transverse Front Engine : 4 cylinders in line 1332 cm³ 16 valves direct injection Turbocharger
Power : 160 PS (118 kW / 158 hp) at 5500 rpm (Max RPM 6000 rpm)
Torque : 270 Nm (27.5 mkg / 199 lb-ft) from 2000 to 3500 rpm (~ 77 to 135 PS)

Reg Number lookup app? Vehicle Smart has mine listed as 130 g/km for emissions and is a 160 version.... and I've just read that the 140PS version has the same emissions.

Engine spec is 117kW/160PS/158bhp

My log book also states 117kW and my sale invoice quotes the 160 bit as part of the make and model info.

When I do VIN lookups I've found most don't show the power rating. I'd suggest the website lookup is wrong and you do have a 160.

About the engine difference ... according to the Nissan salesperson I spoke with the difference is only ... a "software trick".
If this is the case (???) then Nissan is -on purpose- crippling the same engine to be able to sell same cars at higher as well as lower prices (around a 1500 euro difference).
It seems rather strange to me that CO2 emissions as well as fuel consumption would ... remain the same !
This would not even amaze me since I guess this 'trick' is also applied to conform to government regulations/taxation in different countries/world regions.
I knew about BMW selling the same series-3 2l gasoline engine with about 126 as well as 187 HP.
(if spending quite some money in tuning centers-) I was told similar 'tricks' would be possible to fine-tune/upgrade almost any car (! yet not allowed because of a.o. govenmnent taxing purposes, yet many people reportedly do it anyway).
OTOH I would think that some other parts like manual transmissions etc would better be upgraded at the same time !!!?

BTW because of the J12 Tekna+ version that I have pre-ordered I had to get the more powerful 156 HP version anyway.

It doesn't surprise me at all - means the same engine can be used on the production line for either model.

After all Tesla charge thousands for flicking a switch to give added functionality to their cars - and they unflick the switch if you sell the car too! With no refund!

QaiFan, your comment on the “Software” Trick could well be correct. I have actually seen or read nothing on the actual physical difference between the two, so it could be “Chip Tuning” or a “Box of Tricks”. If you are interested in a very good Nissan Article on the Nissan / Renault / Mitsubishi / Mercedes Engine take a read of this attachment - Dave 😊

Thanks for the article Dave.
There must be something strange about all of this since, as far as I could find, the new Alis and supposedly further improves in 50 way engine of the j12 QQ would perform worse in several ways! A. O. the new engine only produces 138 and 156 hp, worse consumption and so on!!???
