So just had the front suspension arms and anti roll bars replaced, and went to test drive before mechanic went off (mobile mechanic).

I'd mentioned to him about a tapping/knocking sound beforehand, and he said it could have been the anti-roll bars (as they'd broken away completely).

Anyway, turn the car on again and it's still there at low revs, but goes away when pressing the throttle. He said it needs investigating, but could be the timing belt/chain?

Anyone have similar symptoms and have any ideas?

Year/Engine/mileage will help a great deal here.

If you are at a standstill and there is a knocking noise, then it wont be from the suspension but from the engine. There are a number of things that could cause this from as simple as a worn engine mount to a more serious issue within the engine such as the bottom end!

From your description, it does sound like something within the engine. Chain tensioner would be my initial guess. When you rev, oil pressure builds up and allows the chain to tension up more, but under idle, a faulty or worn out tensioner may not have enough 'umph' to take up the slack so you get a rattle/tappy type noise.... but that's assuming your engine is either a petrol, or one of the newer 1.6 DCI engine. The 1.5DCI is belt driven.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

The car is noisy as hell when above 2000rpm and in general on the motorway. If the radio is on less than 5, it's drowned out.

Think the engine is fcuked

Does sound like the engine is about to expire.... it maybe salvageable but if its getting worse then bits of metal may already be floating around causing further damage.....
