I think we're both right.................................I read somewhere that certain CVT manufacturers introduced steps into the CVT "electronically" so it feels and sounds more like a conventional auto gearbox when in use. That makes sense when you say that you can also manually "change gear" as well, not driven one myself. When you accelerate in "auto" mode, can you feel or hear a "gear change" or is it one continuous application of the drive?

Thanks for all the replies, certainly brought up some juicy cvt discussions, I'll go drive one next week , place near me in Surrey ( wilsons) has a lot of low mileage ones for sale. I'm so used to the golfs brilliant DSG clutch but hopefully the Qashqai will impress, it was interesting to see that the xtronic cvt saps a whole second off the 0-60 time compared to the manual but I'd imagine in real world driving that difference is negligible .
