1.6 dCi, what is that part in the engine compartment?

What is that part shwon in the picture below:

I know that some engines/versions (both diesel and petrol) have this black box, and some do not contain this part...
What does that part exist for?

It's an air intake resonator. It's an expansion chamber which reduces the engine intake noise. It also inhibits pressure wave harmonics, which cause air pressure in the engine and restrict the amount of airflow across the RPM spectrum. Therefore horsepower is increased as well by fitting a resonator.

Some 1.6 dci has this resonator, and some do not have. Both are 130 hp...
Is engine "stronger" with resonator?

To be sure, you would need to make dyno test before and after the mod.
