FAQ: 1.2 DIG-T (HRA2DDT) Engine Oil Spec

I had to top up my washer fluid this afternoon as it ran out (nope, I used my noggin rather than depending on the non existent washer fluid warning light ) which lead me to checking the oil I noticed it was just above the lower level notch. I believe I could just go Nissan and get a top up, but for the interest of the forum, my own knowledge and the fact I don't really like the idea of running it much longer on such a low level I cracked out the handbook and popped to Halfords. Once confirmed, I will FAQ this. The handbook reads:
HR2DDT engine:
Genuine NISSAN engine oil
5w30API SL or SMILSAC grade GF-3 or GF-4
ACEA A1/B1, A3,B4, A5/B5, C2 or C3

The way I read this spec list, the oil must confirm to one of the options from each line. IE API SL and ILSAC GF-3 and ACEA A1/B1.

Now, I went to Halfords, collected all the 5w30 small bottles I could find and asked behind the counter. Halfords computer recommendation was 5w30 Halfords Renault oil. However on the back it said "Oil Standard: ACEA C4". I decided to dismiss this given the fact ACEA C4 is not listed as being recommended, although I do appreciate that the engine is an "Renault" engine and made after 2007. It could be that C4 surpasses ACEA C2 or C3, but without further knowledge I didn't want to risk. Out of the lot, the one that I found which appeared to be compatible was Castrol Magnatec 5w30 A1 Fully Synth oil. This spec is:
* 5w30
* API SL
* ILSAC GF-3
* ACEA A1/B1, A5,B5

I believe this oil is bob on for the 1.2 DIG-T engine. Anybody like to wade in on this before I go and pour it in?

UPDATE:
Opie Oils responded with the following email:
Hi Stephen Sorry for the delay, it looks like your email was missed for some reason. I very much doubt that the Magnatec A1 you used will cause an issue, my only concern is that as the handbook mentions the ACEA C2 and C3 spec, it could be that your car has a sensitive emissions system. It's rare that a petrol engine requires an ACEA C spec oil (they are mainly for modern diesels), but there are a few petrol engines that have sensitive catalytic converters and need a C spec oil.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-792-acea-c3.aspx Any of the 5w-30 oils via that link should be absolutely fine. Unfortunately, the 1.2 Qashqai is not on our databases yet, so I can't check on definite requirements of the engine, so can't be 100% sure, but I'm almost 100% sure those oils would be suitable. Regards Tim

Interesting response. So looks like Magnatec A1 is "incorrect" although wont do any harm short term (only a couple of months before first service) and low amount (top up), and the better oil would have been Magnatec C3 (also a Halfords recommendation). Not a definitive answer BUT given I sent them the spec required from the handbook and they came back with that link...

This is the one I went for as well SplanK after much digging about for info on it. I bought a 4.5 litre of Magnatec as yours,and although it does not specify Nissan on the outer, it is recommended for Renault, Citreon, and others, that is good enough for me and lets face it we will probably only be adding less than 1/2 litre between services for odd top ups. So it can't do much to change the structure of whatever oil Nissan put in at services

hhmm, reading up on ACEA and it seems to suggest each letter/number combo is an individual spec IEA1 is one spec, and B1 is another (although A is petrol, B is derv) and so forth..http://www.driverstechnology.co.uk/oils.htm This site seems to miss out the C4 spec however. Now, the C part is another spec for catalyst compatibility/level of SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur). The oil I have picked does not have any C rating, just an various A rating. It was noted that Magnatec do the same oil, sold as 'C3' rather than A1, however it didn't state its API or ILSAC specification so I popped it back on the shelf. I wonder if this is more suitable than 'A1'... Engine oil capacity on the 1.2 according to the handbook is 4.6L, historically I am have always used the rule "there is 1L between min and max marker on dipstick" so even with a 0.5L addition, its still quite a high % overall.

Interesting...Just had a look on Opie Oils and it lists the J11 1.2 and recommend a bunch of oils.Handily however, they stock Magnatec (I am not bothered about brand, more spec but since I have the A1 to hand I am using it to compare). Their recommendation is the 'C3' rather than 'A1' Notes pulled from Opie Oils for Magnatec 5w30 Full Syn C3:
Specifications
ACEA A3/B3
ACEA A3/B4
ACEA C3
API SNAPI
CFdexos2
*MB-Approval 229.31VW 502 00VW 505 00BMW Longlife 04.

So no A1/B1 or A5/B5 (although the C range are based on A5/B5 oils...) . API spec does not match (Req SL or SM), and no mention of ILSAC Even more lost now! Looking at some other recommendations, some are just showing A1/B1 and nothing else. I am wondering if the requirement is "one of these" rather than "one spec per line"...?

Steve, when F1 Bob raised the subject of Oils in July 2014 "Engine & Drivetrain" / "Engine Oil for dCi" I checked the Manual we have here and all that I could find quoted for the HRA2DDT engine which we have was 5W-30 ACEA A3/B4*1.
So I took a look around and this is what I found perhaps this will help :

http://www.caltex.com.au/FPL%20PDS/Havo ... 05W-30.pdf

http://castroledge.com.au/oils/5w-30-a3/b4

http://magnatec.castrol.com/en/oil-rang ... 30-a1.html

http://www.q8oils.com/portals/0/pdf/q8o ... r_oils.pdf

On the 19th I have booked for a Recall Action and I am going to ask for an Oil / Filter Change to get rid of any bits and pieces floating around from new, so I will check what goes in the Hole - Dave

So in your manual it only states ACEA A3/B4, and none of the others like in my quote above? Oh, I decided that it was 'close enough' to put in 0.5L of it which has bought the level up to mid point on the dip stick, didn't want to run for too long with it being close to minimum. Will keep an eye on it and may just leave it until next service which is in a couple of months. Would be nice to nail down correctly what's being requested as in a couple of years I will probably start to DIY!

I was at my Dealers
yesterday and had decided to get a Oil / Filter Change done to get rid of any
bits floating around after 2000 Kms driving. So following your comments on
the QQ Oil I asked what would be used and it turned out to be a Nissan Synthetic Oil SAE 5W40 - API SM/CF a€“ ACEA A3/B4.
On a Canister was written "Made in
Belguim" / Nissan #KE900-90032 (1Litre). This appears to be the Oil Grade used
at our Dealers as our previous Cars had the same Grade in also.

Dealer
Action : Oil Change 4,6L x a‚¬13,32 = a‚¬61,27 / Oil Filter = a‚¬15,25
/ Seal Ring = a‚¬1,33 / Labour = a‚¬31,52 Total a‚¬109,37 + 19% Tax = Total = a‚¬130,15

It would appear
that this Oil is a TOTAL / ELF Product which I suppose makes sense due to the
Renault Tieup. The specific specs for
two products are attached :

Ta, as always a font of knowledge!5w40 can be used, although I think 5w30 is preferred due to its ability to support a wider range of temperatures, esp colder temps. Still no clearer on the spec however. Either which way, my engine has yet to implode from using the Magnatec A1 oil so....!

Beat me to it SplanK, I was about to say I was surprised to see 5-40W oil being used when Nissan recommend 5-30W, the 40W I would imagine could be even more of an engine drag during cold weather. I am happy with the drop of Magnatec 05-30W I put in mine at 7.5k miles
