Bi-LED Headlamps - How Good Do You Find Yours?

Post by SplanK » Thu Mar 26, 2015 6:51 pm
Qashqai J11 has never had Bi-LED headlights and will never have ones. How can someone judge on LED headlights performance if he doesn't have elementary knowledge of what headlights his car is equipped with. Bi-LED headlight get away with using just one bulb by employing a mechanical system to direct the beam of light - i.e. the same headlight and bulb is used for Hi and Lo beam.LED headlights have fixed bulbs, with one pair of lights aimed high, and another pair of lights aimed low.
I think the confusion comes from the fact Nissan sell the QQ as having Bi-LED... and regardless, people can make comment as regardless of single or dual bulb as the results are right in front of them!

I don't care, may as well be witch-craft, they are awesome in their sparklyness and that's all that matters

It's a definition the car manufacturer uses. If you do not agree, look at Nissan. They call it Bi-Led.

I know Nissan call it BI-LED but actually use two separate LED lights wher most think the term covers dipped and main beams from one light. IMHO it does not matter one way or the other, the lights are LED and they work on dipped and main beam so I'm happy but would have liked headlamp washers. Yes, I know they were never part of the spec and accept that but still want them on my wish list.

F1 Bob,the good news is that washers can still be retro fitted with OEM parts used. The only problem is that it won't be cheap. However, I dare to say that the washers are very similar if not the same as those used in previous model (the only washer cap will need to be from the new model). If Nissan calls - sells them as Bi-LED, it just proves that marketing department has no clue and tries selling a fly as an elephant! In this case, however, it is unfortunately the other way around, because Bi-LED headlights have half performance of Full LED headlights.

I know I'm a bit late to this party but these are the 1st LED headlights I've had and to me they are amazing on a dark stretch of road I go down all the time. In the Astra (halogen) I would have used full beam, where with these I can just leave them dipped and still get better coverage/brightness as for the auto assist then that to is a dream and works flawlessly. All in all I am impressed with these Bi LED

Slightly off topic with the QQ LED's but the latest offerings from BMW & Audi are very impressive (extremely over engineered but impressive) I would dread to think what the optional extra cost of the BMW OLED units are when they start rolling them out into production models. worth a watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WvK5WC4ns0

Now even ADAC confirmed what I have mentioned 2 years ago when I said that Qashqai LED lights are not the greatests:

Dan, the ADAC as ever have done a nice job again of Testing and Publishing their Results of the 2016 Light Test. Having never had LED's before, I personally noticed a difference when buying the QQ but all this is now old hat with the new technologies on offer but at a price.
What I think should be highlighted is that the QQ did get some negative comments but still got a Note 2 and a "Good" Rating. Yes obviously the others came out better but most probably if you did a price comparison of the Std Vehicles there would be a big price differential compared to the QQ. For instance on the QQ Tekna & Hyundai Tucson Premium the LED's (Lights only) were inclusive in the cost on the VW Tiguan + €1700 / Audi Q3 + €1090 / BMW X1 +€990 and the Seat Ateca + €1340 there was an extra cost. :( Perhaps there might be some changes on the new QQ. ;)
Naturally when you read the German Report there are a lot more facts available but this was to me well worth a post - Thanks Dave ;)
