I hope this is not Boring but we do seem to really on these things in our daily life, but do we really understand how they function and the speed at which they operate ?
This subject on the TAKATA Airbag Problems is seemingly getting bigger and bigger. So just to keep informed on how and what happens when an Airbag is used I have found this TAKATA information which I hope is of interest - Take a look at the Schematic Video Dave

It
now appears that the situation is increasing and even VW are now involved in
investigations in the US, it just makes you wonder where it will all stop and
how many Makes of Cars are actually involved a€“ Dave

VW
is recalling about 461,300 cars in the U.S. and Canada to fix a fault that
could prevent airbags from deploying in an accident. There will be 420,000
models recalled in the U.S. market and another 41,300 in Canada. VW is examining
whether such issues affect cars delivered to other markets. Debris may
contaminate the clock spring that keeps the cars' airbags powered, tearing the
spring and cutting off the electrical connection to the front airbag on the
driver's side.

The
problems experienced by Takata and the Car Manufacturers is now helping production
of other Manufacturers of Airbags :

Autoliv, Daicel and ZF TRW Automotive will make about 68 percent of the
inflators used to repair faulty Takata airbags behind a record vehicle-safety
recall. Takata's three key rivals produced about 50 percent of the inflators
for replacement kits in June. The disclosure was part of responses by suppliers
and automakers last month to questions by the U.S. National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration on the progress of the safety recalls. Autoliv has estimated it will supply as
many as 20 million replacement inflators in 2015 and 2016. TRW, which was acquired by ZF Friedrichhafen earlier this year,
estimates it could make 10 million to 15 million replacement inflators a year
using its spare capacity.

It looks like this problem is expanding as the NHTSA in the US has now contacted other companies which includes : Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar-Land Rover and Tesla asking which of their models use the Takata parts. About 23.4 million Takata airbag inflators have been recalled in the US. The other car manufacturers that received the letters include Suzuki, Volvo Trucks, Volkswagen and Spartan Motors. So far Mercedes, Jaguar-Land Rover and Tesla have all said the air bags they used from Takata are not part of current recalls. When will it end - Dave :(

I suppose it was inevitable that this discussion to dump Takata Air Bags would come from the Major Manufacturers to safe guard their Customers – Dave ;)

Nissan Motor will no longer use air bag inflators made by Japanese auto parts supplier Takata Corp in its cars. Nissan joins most major automakers, including Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co that decided to stop using Takata's inflators that have led to extensive recalls around the world. U.S. auto safety regulators have said Takata's inflators containing ammonium nitrate may cause air bags to explode with excessive force, spraying shrapnel in the vehicle.

There is always somebody that wins in the End and this Company seems to have come out on Top after Takata’s Air Bag Problems – Dave ;)

When the deadly problems with Takata air bag inflators sent the world’s major automakers searching for a new supplier, they didn’t have to look far. AUTOLIV is the largest Automotive-Safety parts company in the world, supplies seat belts, steering wheels, and air bags to virtually every major manufacturer. A massive production network of which the company has 78 factories in 27 countries which means AUTOLIV has been able to step in and fill the vacuum created by Takata’s woes. Incidents of Takata inflators rupturing and spraying plastic and metal shards at passengers have resulted in at least nine deaths in the U.S. since 2009. About 28 million Takata air bag inflators have been recalled in the U.S. in the past few years; recalls of 60 million are in progress worldwide.
AUTOLIV’s share of the air bag market in 2015 was 41% and expects to make 20 million replacement inflators in 2017. Production began in 2015 and is expected to continue through 2017 and possibly into 2018. The company is adding a dozen production lines at several factories to handle the work. More than half of the company’s $9.2 billion in overall sales came from air bags in 2015. The company says it won about half of all frontal air bag orders for new cars last year.

Well it looks like the Takata problem is coming back in a Big Way and now Nissan are deeply involved. It has now been mentioned that the US Rogue (sister to the Qashqai) with vehicles from 2014-17 are involved. It would be interesting to know now if this Takata Technology is also installed in our European QQ’s – World Wide Parts Sourcing ? - Dave

Nissan is recalling about 3.5 million vehicles, including almost 3.2 million in the United States, because the front-passenger airbag might not work properly in a crash, according to reports from the automaker posted 29.04.16 on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The problem with the rest of vehicles in the recall is that airbags may not deploy when they are supposed to because the sensing system fails to register that a passenger is sitting there. It includes some of the automaker’s most popular models: 2013-16 Altima; 2014-17 Rogue; 2016-17 Maxima; 2015-16 Murano; 2013-17 Pathfinder; 2013-16 Leaf, and the 2014-16 Infiniti Q50 and QX60.
