As one of the most efficient car plants in the world, Nissan Sunderland builds half a million Qashqais, Jukes, Notes, Leafs and now Infiniti Q30s a year, at such a speed that raw material is turned into a car in less than a day. Extrapolate Henry Ford’s eureka moment forward through a century of technological progress and you wind up here, in a cathedral of manufacturing in which men, women and robots create 115 cars an hour in a heavy metal ballet of collaborative effort.

Rob, thanks for sharing this writeup from the Car Magazine. The Guy who wrote this needs a medal as this is probably the most complex / detailed step by step writeup I have read, it would appear he has a very good Engineering or an Industry Back Ground. What to me was interesting was that the Nissan Plant is virtually Self Sufficient which is the opposite to when I visited the Mini Plant early this year as this was all basically Sub-Assemblies being delivered from externally and then being assembled.
Looks like Sunderland is worth a visit - Thanks Dave :)

@DaveBerlin,
What you're pointing out is due to historical reasons, many years ago Pressed Steel Fisher (Swindon) was an independent pressings facility who produced Body in White pressings and sub-assemblies for a variety of automotive manufacturers (Austin, MG etc.) and IIRC even pressings for white goods manufacturers during the leaner times, over a period of time PSF became Swindon Body and Pressings, Austin Rover, Rover Group Ltd and currently BMW Mini. Back in the day PSF would then ship these panels and sub-assy's along the A420 to the Cowley production facility (who back in the day also had their own pressings shop) where they would turn these into assembled Body-in-White vehicles and subsequently into fully trimmed vehicles.

The Nissan plant is a 'new' facility designed from a relative blank sheet of paper so it was possible to include all these things into the one factory.
