Is it actually 'auto' or is it 'intermittent'?

It's in the auto position , but stays on constantly even if you move the up and down speed switch , it's as though it's it in the on position ?

Does it say either A or Auto on the stalk, or is it some other symbol or mark?

There is no indicator mark to show its on auto. Push stalk all the way up and it will flick wipe, release and it settles in the off position. Press stalk down one notch and that on auto, one more notch and it's slow wipe, one further and it's fast wipe. Further v towards the end of the stalk is the twist ring that adjusts sensitivity. If you've got all this in the right position I would suggest it's the rain sensor at fault, I don't know where that is on your J10. The J11 sensor is the windscreen in front of the rearview mirror.
