This is the development by Continental of an Innovative Ring Catalyst for Turbo Petrol Engines with more Efficient NOx Reduction.
New Real Driving Emissions (RDE) legistration will strictly regulate NOx emissions under all driving conditions, requiring high catalyst efficiency across a wide engine operating range.
Substantial reductions in nitrogen oxide emissions are also required by the US SULEV 30 emissions standard. SULEV = Super ultra-low emissions vehicle which is a U.S. classification for passenger vehicle emissions. The classification is based on producing 90% less emissions than an equivalent petrol-powered vehicle. SULEV is a stricter standard than LEV (Low Emission Vehicle) and ULEV (Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle), however not as strict as PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle)
Close-coupled annular catalytic converter developed by Continental supports near complete NOx conversion in turbocharged gasoline engines.
The core of the catalytic converter is wound from “LS” metal foil, a material developed by Continental. Longitudinal structures (= LS) in this foil or substrate create more turbulence in the exhaust gas. This ensures better contact between the nitrogen oxides and the catalytically coated substrate, resulting in higher conversion efficiency.
