Well tomorrow is the big day - we are collecting our new car!

Today is being spent removing dashcams and supplementary tech from the old Volvo C30 which is going in part-ex.

VERY excited about the new QQ

I'll post some photos over the weekend, weather permitting..............

Best regards

David

Dave, All the Best for the QQ Pickup tomorrow I am sure you will enjoy it.
You might think this is a bit of a Nosey question but where did you get the Name "Trabant Dave" from. I am just interested as these "Things" are still buzzing around Berlin and can be Rented also. They are still a Collectors car out here although they are real Stinkers - Thanks Dave ;)

Hi Dave, not a nosey question at all; going back over 30 years now, I had a pen-friend in Berlin, not unusual in itself, but I was communicating with a girl in Niederschoenhausen, which as you as a Berlin resident is in what was 'Berlin Hauptstadt der DDR' aka East Berlin......

As a bit of background, I had been a member of the Young Socialists which at the time was the youth wing of the Labour party, since my secondary school days and was quite committed to 'the cause'. One of the members was a girl of German extraction who thought her cousin in (East) Germany would find my mixture of boyish charm, rapier-like wit, and hard-line socialist tendencies an alluring mix, and that I would be enchanted by her long blonde hair, big blue eyes and matching blue FDJ blouse (FDJ was the youth wing of the leading party in the DDR) and lo! it was so!

We wrote many times over the years, exchanging photos, life experiences, rude stories and political views, and after about three years or so, she invited me to visit and meet 'Mutti und Vati' - her parents. As her dad was a party functionary I'm guessing that they wanted to ensure that I was not a decadent fascist revanchist who wanted to have his evil way with the flower of Socialist womanhood and encourage her to scurry over/under the Wall.

After all that correspondence I think that they had worked out I would have been more likely to defect myself at that time.....

To cut a long story short, armed with the correct visa in my passport, I made the journey to Berlin and spent a marvellous time there with my sweetheart, saw all sorts of things that were completely alien to my western eyes and taste-buds; VoPo's Trabis and Club Cola. We stayed in touch many years, before and after die Wende, and on a visit in the early 2000's saw a wonderfully original Trabi for sale silly cheap, which I bought and had trailered back to the UK.

The car was very eye-catching both in style and colour, being a very bright turquoise - and it attracted a lot of attention, mainly positive.

One day I had used it to drive to work and one of my friends saw it parked outside. He asked the receptionist to speak to Dave, and she said is it welsh Dave or Trabant Dave you want?

And thus began the legend that is Trabant Dave :D

DaveTrabant, thanks for your comments makes interesting reading and brings back the memories. Niederschönhausen is now in the borough of Pankow-Schönhausen North from the City of Berlin, we are on the South side near the Old DDR Border.
I first started travelling out here in 85 on a weekly basis and often there were Car bans due to the pollution from the DDR Industries and all those Trabants, Moscovitches etc. For members interested these were manufactured in limited colors from 1975-89, had a 2stroke 18hp engine and was made of Fibre- glass like Duroplast material reinforced with recycled fibers like cotton, wood it looked like compressed hardboard and when rolled actually shattered. The Joke was when you were born you should order one as it took around 10 years to get one, a little longer than a QQ.
Sorry if this has bored members - DaveBerlin :D

Not bored me Dave, in fact it's brought back fond memories of growing up. Back in the early 1970's my dad's first car was a Morris Traveller with a wooden frame that we sanded down before varnishing. Next up was an old red Moskevitch estate that I recall had a hand crank starter in the front grill. It sounded like a tank. That was followed by a MK1 Escort Estate. It's funny, he's had cars whilst I've been an adult but I can't remember what they were, but the ones whilst we were kids stick in my mind like it was only yesterday!

Hope you're pleased with the QQ when you collect it. I always liked the Volvo C30. Reminded me a bit of the Volvo 480 that I also liked in the late '80s. I miss my C70 2.3 T5 coupé, although I don't miss its fuel consumption!
Used to have 2015 1.6dCi 130 Xtronic N-tec+ in Gun Metallic
